History of the DYO® Green Building Decision Kit
The preliminary work on the original DYO® Green Building Decision Kit began as a conceptual idea in 2004 and the artwork and rough kit was created in 2005.
The retail version of the first DYO® GBD Kit (cover shown below) was released in mid-2006 and was sold in tradeshows, home-shows, green events and other venues all across the USA. This kit was well received and a copy of this kit was given to Bob Jones of the National Association of Home Builders to be used as a reference for the original NAHB "Green Building Guidelines". This GBD Kit included the first version of the Green Decision Matrix software, which helped people refine their requirements and determine their top-tier energy, green and health/life improving products and strategies.
But, more importantly, the intent behind the DYO® GBD Kit is to introduce the concept of Design Charrettes and the integrated team approach to any size or type of project. As you can see in the photo collage (shown below) that we created with the first version of the kit, the project owner or Design Charrette team leader is involving all the key people into the early design process so that they can contribute their particular skills, experience and trade knowledge.
This contribution or combining of key experts can help the final project be much better. Said another way, the more time and effort spent in the planning stage can result in a better final product. Or, in carpenter's lingo, "Measure twice; cut once".
However, things in this world do not remain static. New products are introduced all the time, national energy and green programs get updated and refined and results from the original products and strategies start to pour in. The current version of the DYO® GBD Kit was finalized in 2009 and has updated information and also a newer version of the Green Decision Matrix Software. The software is macro-enabled and works best with Microsoft Excel 2007 or 2010. But, the software also will work with older versions of Excel as well.
